MARRIAGE

When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I've got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn't know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly.

She didn't seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn't talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn't love her anymore. I just pitied her!

With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company.

She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. The woman who had spent ten years of her life with me had become a stranger. I felt sorry for her wasted time, resources and energy but I could not take back what I had said for I loved Jane so dearly. Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see. To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had obsessed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer now.

The next day, I came back home very late and found her writing something at the table. I didn't have supper but went straight to sleep and fell asleep very fast because I was tired after an eventful day with Jane.

When I woke up, she was still there at the table writing. I just did not care so I turned over and was asleep again.

In the morning she presented her divorce conditions: she didn't want anything from me, but needed a month's notice before the divorce. She requested that in that one month we both struggle to live as normal a life as possible. Her reasons were simple: our son had his exams in a month's time and she didn't want to disrupt him with our broken marriage.

This was agreeable to me. But she had something more, she asked me to recall how I had carried her into out bridal room on our wedding day.

She requested that every day for the month's duration I carry her out of our bedroom to the front door ever morning. I thought she was going crazy. Just to make our last days together bearable I accepted her odd request.

I told Jane about my wife's divorce conditions. . She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she applies, she has to face the divorce, she said scornfully.

My wife and I hadn't had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. So when I carried her out on the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mommy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain. From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly; don't tell our son about the divorce. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside
the door. She went to wait for the bus to work. I drove alone to the office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn't looked at this woman carefully for a long time. I realized she was not young any more. There were fine wrinkles on her face, her hair was graying! Our marriage had taken its toll on her. For a minute I wondered what I had done to her.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I felt a sense of intimacy returning. This was the woman who had given ten years of her life to me.

On the fifth and sixth day, I realized that our sense of intimacy was growing again. I didn't tell Jane about this. It became easier to carry her as the month slipped by. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger.

She was choosing what to wear one morning. She tried on quite a few dresses but could not find a suitable one. Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown bigger. I suddenly realized that she had grown so thin, that was the reason why I could carry her more easily.

Suddenly it hit me... she had buried so much pain and bitterness in her heart. Subconsciously I reached out and touched her head.

Our son came in at the moment and said, Dad, it's time to carry mom out. To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had become an essential part of his life. My wife gestured to our son to come closer and hugged him tightly. I turned my face away because I was afraid I might change my mind at this last minute. I then held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly; it was just like our wedding day.

But her much lighter weight made me sad. On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. I held her tightly and said, I hadn't noticed that our life lacked intimacy.

I drove to office.... jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my mind...I walked upstairs. Jane opened the door and I said to her, Sorry, Jane, I do not want the divorce anymore.

She looked at me, astonished, and then touched my forehead. Do you have a fever? She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Jane, I said, I won't divorce. My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn't value the details of our lives, not because we didn't love each other anymore. Now I realize that since I carried her into my home on our wedding day I am supposed to hold her until death do us apart.

Jane seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into tears. I walked downstairs and drove away.

At the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet of flowers for my wife. The salesgirl asked me what to write on the card. I smiled and wrote, I'll carry you out every morning until death do us apart.

That evening I arrived home, flowers in my hands, a smile on my face, I run up stairs, only to find my wife in the bed - dead.
My wife had been fighting CANCER for months and I was so busy with Jane to even notice. She knew that she would die soon and she wanted to save me from the whatever negative reaction from our son, in case we push thru with the divorce.-- At least, in the eyes of our son--- I'm a loving husband....

The small details of your lives are what really matter in a relationship. It is not the mansion, the car, property, the money in the bank. These create an environment conducive for happiness but cannot give happiness in themselves. So find time to be your spouse's friend and do those little things for each other that build intimacy. Do have a real happy marriage!

The other watcher

A man went to a hotel and walked up to the front desk to check in. The woman at the desk gave him his key and told him that on the way to his room, there was a door with no number that was locked and no one was allowed in there. Especially no one should look inside the room, under any circumstances. So he followed the instructions of the woman at the front desk, going straight to his room, and going to bed. The next night his curiosity would not leave him alone about the room with no number on the door. He walked down the hall to the door and tried the handle. Sure enough it was locked. He bent down and looked through the wide keyhole. Cold air passed through it, chilling his eye.

What he saw was a hotel bedroom, like his, and in the corner was a woman whose skin was completely white. She was leaning her head against the wall, facing away from the door. He stared in confusion for a while. He almost knocked on the door, out of curiosity, but decided not to. This disinclination saved his life. He crept away from the door and walked back to his room. The next day, he returned to the door and looked through the wide keyhole. This time, all he saw was redness. He couldn’t make anything out besides a distinct red color, unmoving. Perhaps the inhabitants of the room knew he was spying the night before, and had blocked the keyhole with something red.

At this point he decided to consult the woman at the front desk for more information. She sighed and said, "Did you look through the keyhole?" The man told her that he had and she said, "Well, I might as well tell you the story. A long time ago, a man murdered his wife in that room, and her ghost haunts it. But these people were not ordinary. They were white all over, except for their eyes, which were red."

When I am teaching and my students are typing away on their laptops while smiling at the screen in front of them, I know that they are more likely to be on MSN than to be with me. Every few minutes, their eyes would dart up and they would nod their heads as if what I had just said needed their approval

Why do people bother to come to class if they are intent on doing a half-dozen other things at the same time- playing Solitaire, checking out MSN, e-mailing, Facebooking and writing out a last-minute answer to an assignment question they should have done weeks ago?

Our multitasking habits are a bane indeed. I can no longer have a cup of coffee without feeling as though I am contesting for time. I have dinner with Aileen while Candace calls me on my cellphone and Aileen takes the moment that I am on my phone to SMS Val, as Val feeds her daughter while working on her computer. How many times have you excused yourself to go to the restroom, only to return to a friend busy SMS-ing, and then wondered if he preferred to be elsewhere?

It is not a crazy thing to meet friends, then spend half the time on the cellphone with someone else? When I point out to friends that I have better things to do than to watch them SMS, they assure me they can multitask, not knowing that I do mind waiting - and they do not multitask well anyway. In this day, we can no longer get the full attention of people even when we meet them face to face.

Our multitasking habit creeps into other areas of life. Because we are not accustomed to concentrating on a single task for an extending period of time, books today are different in layout from the books decade ago. The young today can no longer read the good old courier font. They need a snazzy layout, headings in bold Comic Sans every few lines and cute balloon columns with fanciful bullet points. Depth of analysis is lost on this generation. What they want are bite-sized pieces of information - like how the Time-Out chocolate now comes in convenient popcorn-like pieces.

We have also lost our ability to make simple commitments. We play it by ear when we want to meet. We know we can reschedule the appointment because the other person is always contactable via the cellphone. Gone are the days when we woukd mark our diaries and expect to keep our appointments because there was no way to change them at the last minute. And whatever happened to waiting to speak with someone? A decade ago, when I wanted to call a friend, I would wait for her to get home. The waiting would allow me to process my thoughts. And when we talk, I would be sure she is not also playing with her cellphone. Now, if I am irritated with someone, I would just shoot her a rude e-mail, delete it from my trash can and pretend I have not done anything bad. Postmodern connectivity facilitates an instant torrent. I have lost the character building habit of being forced to cool down because someone I am angry with is not within target range.

With MSN, IM, ICQ, SMS and Blackberry, the line between acquaintances and friends have blurred. We find it easier to use these modes of communication than to call someone up. While we would not have contacted someone we were not so familiar with on the phone, these alternative modes facilitate superficial social contact. So we end up with breadth in our relationships but little depth.

A decade ago, I was learning how to e-mail on an ugly black screen. Eight years ago, my mom got me a pager. Growing up without postmodern connectivity, I am troubled by the different world the young grow up in. What I have mentioned are little things in themselves, but if we continue in theis way 24/7, the effect on us would be insidiously greater than we realise.

Have you not realised only too late when your computer is hit by a virus, and you lose all your e-mail addresses, that your reliance on the e-mail address function on your computer has robbed you of the ability to recall addresses? We used to remember people's telephone numbers, now we are totally dependent on our cellphone's contact list. And our reliance on the calculator means we cannot do mental sums when splitting a restaurant bill. So what else are we allowing ourselves to be robbed of?

String Theory

String Theory

Now, where did it come from?

Right about 1900-today, the quatum theory holds true for all matter. It describes how atoms (that makes us up) can act like waves under certain conditions. That itself is a momentus discovery!

Scientist then began doing all sorts of experiment which eventually make up today's quatum theory.

However, as we go into the very small; smaller then the atoms, quatum theory is just rubbish. The math disintergrated; the theory just doesn't make any sense.

In fact, atoms are made of sub-atomic particles known as quacks. And these quacks are made of something which scientist are trying to prove; strings of energy. These strings are approximated to be at 10^-12 m.

Imagine if the string theory is true. Then all matter as we know it are fragments of energy of different frequencies which difine the very nature of that matter. (E.g a Carbon atom may have strings of frenquency x while a hydrogen atom may have a frenquency y in their strings)

Now that's the theory of everything! It explains why phenomenal like the big bang could have started. In fact, string theory states that it is the collision of two stings which cause the big bang. Which means, there was something before the creation of everything.

However to prove the existence of strings, we must first find 7 new dimensions. If strings ever exist, there will be new dimensions. Today, we know there are 4 dimensions, the time dimension and space in its x, y, z direction. If string theory is true, there will be a total of 11 dimension! That's pretty pausible if we try to relate stuff like Dark matter and Dark energy.

Dark matter is a unknown substance only known with gravitational properties. We know it there by seeing how it interact with stars and galaxies. Perhaps this dark matter transverse along one of the new dimensions?

Then there's the Dark energy. Scientist discovered then the universe is actually expanding at a accelerating rate. So space itself is expanding way faster then the speed of light now. That's the only thing that travels faster than light I guess... The cause of this is really Dark energy and this would fit in nicely with another dimension. Well, 2 down 5 more to go. All the best scientist!

Note: This entry is based on what I think is true. The string theory is currently been worked by numerous scientist. If you are interested about this, search youtube for it. There's a documentary which explains it.

A Really Mad World

Awaken by the hail the alarm clock brings, we are bought back to reality.

With almost no time for a good breakfast, we rush to where the society expects us to be and do: work, work, and more work.

That is really what is in it for most Singaporeans. It really turely is a mad world out there running a never-ending race. All of us are involved, no one is left out. Individuals cannot help but ponder who started this damn thing and before he can dig deeper, he finds out that his project is due tomorrow; exams is in one week time; bills are still unsettled; bleh bleh bleh... you name it, Singapore has it.

So, why are we all doing this for? For money? Happiness? Power? Seriously, the blind veil of democracy is high stress level. Companies compete and students follow. The economy rushes and everyone must follow; for fear of being left out. If it is for money, then one can never find enough of it. What is happiness if you're living in constant pressure... The real culprit then is surely power.

We all want the best for ourselves and what is digusting is overdoing it, resulting in power hunger. To put it blantly, democracy encourages it.

There is really nothing much we can do since democracy is seemingly the world's solution to its problems. What we can do is to embrace ourselves for the tougher future. What the youths call 'Tanking' the workload may well be the best solution for individuals. If anytime, and I am sure it will be soon, you find it stressful, just remember we all in it together.

To end this, I would like to shout,"It is a really mad world."

You know profounders, It's been so long since I type something in here. I did not even know of a title to give this post as this is... just... truely touching.

Back in 24th July 2008, when this blog is still in lame black design (Hey,I chose it!) I still remember Joseph sitted beside me in front of the computer. We had this look on our face like, is this going to work out? We hesitated but we did it anyway. Little did we know the impact it has made. We had the behind the scences Etc... hah ha!

Looking back, I did not regret the risky decision we made and that really is life! Life is truely risky, none can ever play safe if you wanna do great things.

The admins had long hours working into the wee hours of the night, but it's all worth it!
(Not in any order)
Thank you Joseph for your timeless dedication you have invested here!
Thank you Valarie for your devotedness in doing up the designs and songs!
Thank you Alvin for your ever-happy pressence which lit up even the darkest of days!
Thank you Syafiqah for your kind and motherly love for the class!

Guys, you have made this 5/2 dream possible. It is now the main hq where we can bond and share our lastest woes or joy! This is where memories are kept, encouragement are released and joys shared. The photos kept in those entries are beautiful!

I hope that this will be the true connecting system for us, profounders!

Here's a short journal on the happenings during the crisis.

Short of a miracle

Valarie ‘s crisis in March
Day 1 ---- 26.3.09 ( Thursday)

At about 6.30 in the evening, I received a call from Alvin. He broke the news that Valarie might not be able to pull through the night. Doctors had informed the parents to gather relatives and friends to the hospital to prepare for the worst.
I was overwhelmed. It was too sudden as I had just spoken to the father on 13.2.09 and he mentioned that the doctor had commented that she had an 80% chance of recovery . Everyone had been upbeat about it.

After the call, my immediate response was; I needed to bring the anointing oil and rush down to SGH to pray for her before it was too late. I quickly called my husband (JC) to send me to the hospital. Subsequently, I received more phone calls, from Qiu Jin and Syafiqah informing me about Valarie. They were all on their way to SGH.

At ward 45, three quarters of the pupils from 2008 5/2 class were there. There was also a big group from 2008 5/1 class. The waiting area and the corridor just outside the ward leading to the ICU were milling with anxious faces. Later in the night, more turned up.

Ee Hwa, Emily, Qui Jin,Xiang Ning, Harveen, Jacintha, Jazreel, Sally, Wendy, Julia , Fadzilla, Amalina, Sakinah, Syafiqah, Amy, Ting Ting, Alvin, Zheng Yi, Ignatious, Clarence, Joseph, Peng Hong, Yong Kang, Jie Xiang, Khairul, Wei Xian, Shawn, Boon Kai, Jershon …. Those from 5/1 were Felicia, Amelia, Dennis, Jolene… Many more were present.

The relatives were allowed to go in 2 at a time. Valarie‘s mother told us that the ICU doctor was not hopeful about Valarie but the oncologist was still trying ... She was given a very high dosage of antibiotics to fight the extremely strong viral attack.

Standing outside the glass screen door of the ICU , I could see Valarie lying very still with tubes from the arms, the mouth, the nose all hooked up to the support system. I told the mother that JC and I were Christians and asked her for permission to pray for Valarie. She replied that it was ok as Valarie had been prayed for in the ward before. She stood outside the glass door as JC and I stepped into ICU donning gloves, overalls, and face masks.

Valarie was bloated. She needed nothing short of a miracle and the healing power of God. When I spoke to her, she tried to communicate by scribbling on the clip board, but her hands were so weak that twice, what appeared were just scrawny lines, something like SK…. (When she is well, I would like to find out what she wanted to say at that moment). I told her, Jesus loves her and the resurrection power of Jesus shall flow through her and she shall live to testify the goodness of God. I rubbed the anointing oil on her left palm. After praying and commanding the angel of death to leave her, we left the room.

Just outside the ICU, the boys and girls immediately gathered around to find out more about the situation. I repeated what the mother told me about her condition and I told them that Valarie needed a miracle. As there was nothing much that we could do, Emily, Jershon, Jie Xiang, Clarence, Qiu Jin, Alvin and the others , together we all adjourned to the canteen to have dinner.

Day 2 -- 27.3.09 ( Friday)
In school, I informed the principal about Valarie‘s condition. She made an announcement during staff contact time about Valarie and she said she would probably visit her .
In the night at about 8.30, at ward 45, Mr. Lau, Mr. Leong and Mr .Loy came and we could only watch her behind the glass screen door at the ICU. She was hooked onto a dialysis machine. No one was allowed to go into the ICU. A big group of students turned up too. Dhanaram, Mei Yan,…..
Outside the glass door, JC and I prayed. Valarie‘s mother, holding the Buddhist praying beads was also praying.
On the way out of the ward, Valarie ‘s mother told us the father would want to sustain her life at any cost as the doctor hinted that she might not last through the night. I held her hands and replied that we should continue to pray.

Day 3----28.3.09 ( Saturday)
At about 10 plus in the morning, received sms from Alvin and Syafiqah about Valarie‘s condition. Spoke to the father and was confirmed that Valarie’s situation had improved. The white blood count was normal.
9 pm--- It was very quiet at ward 45 compared to the previous 2 nights as most visitors including students had come either in the morning or the afternoon. The mother was seen sleeping on the sofa at the waiting area, overcame with fatigue. We spoke to the father. He was visibly relieved and smiled as he explained how the white blood count has hit 1000 and Valarie would now need to fight on using her own immune system. Valarie‘s swelling on both hands had subsided. She was also given a blood transfusion by the aunty in the morning. The effects would be known in one or two day’s time.
Standing outside the glass screen door, the father was cautious in letting us into the ICU as he was concerned about Valarie ‘s low immune system. Anyway, I went into the ICU and prayed for healing.
Doctors, the human spirit, will and youth can only do so much, we need miracles.

Day 4 --- 29.3.09 ( Sunday)
Spoke the father on the phone. According to him, the swelling had come down and Valarie was able to pass a little urine. However, she was running a temperature of 39⁰ C. But the doctor said her condition was stable.

Day 7 --- 2.4.09 (Thursday )
Spoke to the father on the phone at around 3.00 pm. He said that Valarie had just been transferred from ICU to a single normal ward in the afternoon. Dear 5/2,

The photos of the last class outing is finally out.. Let us recapture the moments of fun, laughter, peace and joy.. The class spirit and bondings are evident throughout all the photos.. According to the time schedule, the pictures posted will show us how the class outing went out.. Here we go!

Starting off from the top, we arrive at Mdm Chin's house.. The first thing that greeted us upon arrival was none other than the Christmas Tr- I meant The Door.. THEN the Christmas Tree.. To many of us, a white christmas tree was a significant sight.. Not everyone has seen it before and we captivated its beauty with a photo.. (Well, at least someone did) Before long, we settled down and began having our own conversations while Clarence started to prepare for the activities of that evening.. The second and third photos were taken when we were busy chatting amongst ourselves (Yes yes, '6-inch voice'.. You wish..).. The last photo was taken by Mdm Chin which explains why she isn't in it.. ('One Conversation' was practiced here)

After the photos, Clarence decided that it was time to begin with the activities.. We got EXCITED! Until... Until we saw 3 loaves of bread that was.. We knew immediately it was an EATING COMPETITION.. (GO BING XUE! GO JOSEPH! GO JIE XIANG!) Well, EVERYONE had to take part..

Eventually, Group 3 got disqualified as SOME of them were cheating.. The losing team had to drink up a bottle of 1.5 Litre Coke.. To make things more interesting, two representatives had to volunteer themselves to finish it.. Ridzuan and Amin came up and bravely yet humourously completed half the bottle.. Then some games to entertain the guests.. Here are some instant replays..

In the bitter cold Russian ground, a man was sitting on a bench. He wore a torn jacket and a pair of dirty pants. That man have had his hands, shaped in a cup, lifted for 3 hours. No one bothered to even look at him. No one gave.

Freezing in sub-zero temperature, he was worried for his family. How is he going to even feed them? He kept thinking of them relentlessly. In his sea of thoughts, a white fine car stopped in front of him.

'Can I finally feed my family?'

A lady got out from the car. Her intention was not to give. It was obvious that she had a punctured tire.

However, he was not disappointed. Instead, he got up and offered to help her. Oblivious to his difficulties, the lady accepted gladly.

Twist, twist, the jack-lift went.

He changed the tire, without expecting anything in return.

"Thanks for your kind offer. I owe you. How much do you need?" the lady gladly spoke.

"I'm Anderson Rufue. If you want to repay me, give that money to someone who needs it more."
he smiled and walked off.

The lady set off, deep in thought about what Anderson just said. She then pulled over at a cafe down the street for her lunch. She was greeted by a cheerful waitress. She ordered her food and observed that the waitress was about 7 months pregnant.

The waitress had endured sores and pains in her frigile body. The lady ate with a heavy heart. Thinking of Anderson, she paid with a hundred dollar bill and left without her change.

Surprised, the waitress cleared her table and found a note written on a handkerchief.

"Take this. You need it more than I do."

Under the note, another 6 hundred dollar bill was stacked neatly.

For 3 months, she forced herself to work for her unborn baby. With this money, she could just make ends meet. She wondered how the lady knew her difficulties.

At night, she lay beside her husband and wept. She said," We can survive now, Anderson Rufue."

Even as I am writing this post, anxiety huants me relentlessly.

The long wait was tormenting and I will assure you that it's going to get tougher.

Even as the written papers are immenient, I tire myself out. I eventually burn out.

The Captain glanced back at his comrade as the Germans approaches him. It was clearly five to one. He didn't stand a chance.

Blow after blow.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

A rifle clicked and fired.

The Germans showed no mercy.

The Captain heart's ached badly. He wept. The rest of the battlalion lowered their chins. A defeated spirit engulfed them once again. They had lost another comrade, one they considered dear.

That was two days back.

Now, the battalion crawled their way to freedom. Feets swollen and infested with blisters. Even breathing was labourous. About a kilometres away, the Captain spotted an outpost bearing an America flag. Their spirits were lifted.

However, a mighty river was in their way. Moving at tremedous speed, the waters had a strange smell. Soon, they figured the smell was blood. It was a bloody river. The blood was not the issue. It was the bitter cold temperature the water bear. One could die, not by drowning but by freezing in this river.

"Brothers, this is the final push." their Captain spoke with shear uncertainty.

"Sir, we have gone through thick and thin with you. Surely we must make it out alive!" one soldier spoke.

The rest nodded; some even laughed in agreement.

"There they are! Get them!" a sudden harsh voice broke the still air.

The Germans caught up with them. Shots were whipping through the air. The brave battalion limped into the freezing waters and wriggled their way to the opposite bank. With bullets whizzing pass them, they push through the current.

The nearby friendly outpost was alerted and sounded the emergency alarm. Soon, scores of soldiers flooded the river and a battle occurred again. Outnumbered, the Germans retreated and another victory was secured.

Warren Buffet, richest man in USA. Billgates comes second.

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity.

Here are some very interesting aspects of his life:

1. He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!

2. He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.

3. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha, that he bought after he got married 50 years ago.

He says that he has everything he needs in that house.
His house does not have a wall or a fence.

4. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.

5. He never travels by private jet, although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

6. His company, Berkshire Hathaway, owns 63 companies.

He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of these companies, giving them goals for the year.

He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis.

Please hang on...

That was one phrase I hated the most. However hated it may be, I realised, not too long after, it was for the better.

Hanging on.

A battalion with 10 men marching in treacherous enemy ground. They had been on the same mission for 3 weeks and were worn out. They had lost 5 other men in action. Their mission was to get out alive.

"Hang in there brothers!" the all familiar voice of their Captain,weary but yet firm, weakly wriggled it's way through the dusty air.

All were in total submission, believed in obedience without question. The soldiers marched on, rushed into combat if they must. All but one.

They were different individual, had different dreams and jobs. Yet were united for one purpose; to get home safely. All united but one.

The one soldier decided to give up. He was not willing to fight on; an empty vessel, a foolish child.
The Captain said nothing and continued the long journey, one that promised death to the weak.

A bridge was up ahead and to survive, they must cross it. With enemy zooming right up their trail, they had little time to negotiate the tatty old wooden bridge, littered with mutilated bodies; a scary reminder of the possible consequences if they fail their misson.

Luck was not with them and the Nazi infantry and armour division caught up. Five tanks and fifty men in total. They were forced into combat once again.

With commands from the Captain, they managed to stop stall enough time to escape by blowing the bridge. However, the unwilling soldier didn't hang on and was slow. The bridge blew up before he intercepted it and was left behind to the Germans.

Hanging on requires endurance and perseverance in their highest form. This true test will determine who hangs out and who lets go. Only the strong ones will make it.

As a saying goes," Success only comes if you decide to hang on when others have let go."

I know it's tough. Battlefields are not easy but are necessary. The war will be over soon.

Hang in there. Promise me you don't let go now. The fruits of your labour will surely be pleasant!

Biology: plants

Hi there! This is the post is all about plants =D for all Bio students! (the minorityof the class)

Ok... lets start with the formulaes..:

1) photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen

[6CO2 + 6H2O -> C6H12O + 6O2] * [in the presence of (sun)light and chlorophyll] *

2) respiration:
Glucose + Oxygen = Carbon Dioxide + Water + Energy
[C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy]

Ok the common misunderstanding: respiration occurs in plants happens when photosynthesis halts. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG! respiration is always occurring, to produce energy for the plant. Photosynthesis occurs ONLY in the presence of light and chlorophyll.

Therefore: the typical question of respiration and photosynthesis... a submerged plant is placed under a bright light, after awhile, it is placed in an enclosed room without light. Describe what happens to the oxygen in the water and why.

If you were to explain it as such: photosynthesis occurs when the plant is under a bright light, thus photosynthesis occurs, the level of carbon dioxide in the water drops and the level of oxygen in the water increases. After the plant was placed in the dark room, respiration takes place and thus the level of oxygen decreases and the level of carbon dioxide increases as photosynthesis does not take place due to the absence of light.

Seems right? Actually, if this were to be a three mark question, you'd proabably only receive about 1 mark!! why?? because of the way the sentence is phrased. from this, the marker gets the impression that respiration occurs only when the plant is placed in darkness, and the photosynthesis stops.

So... the right way to phrase the answer is as such: photosynthesis occurs when the plant is under a bright light, thus photosynthesis occurs, the level of carbon dioxide in the water drops and the level of oxygen in the water increases. After the plant was placed in the dark room, respiration continues and thus, the level of oxygen decreases and the level of carbon dioxide increases as photosynthesis does not take place due to the absence of light.

funny right? with just a difference as minor as that, u lose 2 marks? well with just that change of word, the entire concept of respiration changes. So... in future... be careful of how u phrase ALL your answers, to prevent the opportunity for the marker to deduct marks from your script =)

Ok now for the transportation in plants:

Xylem vessels and pholem vessels: xylem vessels transport water throughout the plant, while the pholem vessels transport food throughout the plant.

alright, lets link to other sub-topics.

The regular modified cells:

the xylem vessel is modified in such a way to suit its function. The modifications of the xylem vessels are: a lignified cellulose cell wall(extra hard and strong to support the plant), it is hollow and has no nucleus(it is dead) to enable faster transport of water throughout the plant.

the root hair cell is modified for absorption of water, it has an extended area for larger surface area, its cell sap is so as to lower the water potential in the cell, so that osmosis might occur!

Those were the 2 questions usually asked when it comes to modified cells in plants.

As for the transport in plants, a typical question would be: how does osmosis play a part in the absorption of water in plants.

You probably think that it is active transport that takes place instead of osmosis. and you'd probably be stuck. well you require to understand.. active transport only helps in the transportation of water in plants! By evaporation by the stomata, water is *sucked* up the xylem vessel(Think of the syringe). osmosis has to occur in the absorption of water through the root hair cells. Active transportation does not play a part in it! Osmosis is required to absorp water from the surrounding soil, thus the reason of the high concentration of cell sap in the root hair cells!

This is about all i have to post.. so i hope it helps... Just remember! You shouln't memorise Biology! It just requires understanding and passion!!

Formulas!!!

Volume of cylinder is HRsq (R is to the power of 2)

Volume of cone is 1/3HRsq (R is to the power of 2)

Hint to remember it easily- Cone is always 1/3 volume of cylinder, and cylinder is the circle area time its height. This might help u guys to remember.

Now we go on to the surface area of cone and cylinder

Surface area of cylinder

Step 1: We find the circumference of the cylinder D

Step 2: After that the height of the cylinder mulitple D. So it DH

Hint: This is like a rectangle, u find the circumference which is the side, and mulitple the height to find the surface area.

Surface area of a cone is RL

L is the slanted length of the cone. Sorry this you guys would have to memorise.

Whoa, this is frustrating, I would like to use (pi) to sub for this annoying symbol !!

Gradient of speed/time graph is the acceleration of the object.

Area of speed/time graph is the distance travelled by the object.

For distance/time graph, it is NOT the case!!

For distance/time graph the distance is given on the graph. since its distance time graph, u can find speed.

The gradient and the area of distance/time graph do not represent anything at all. So do not get trick.

* Also when distance/time graph have a constant gradient, it does not makes it accleration constant. Instead the acceleration is 0 cause there is NO increase in speed since the speed is constant cause distance divide by time is speed.

Even as the Prilims are over, it is not time to slack. Whatever results you may have gotten, be it good or bad, just remember one thing. Stay Focus.

Focus is really powerful and I will show you a few examples of focus in action.

Focus in action in science.

Sun rays are natural occurring light. They travel straight and do not bend. However harmless they may be, they are vital to all of our eco-system.

Plants need them.
Our solar-cells requires them.
We need them to see and navigate our way!

Already useful just like we are, adding focus to it can make it more powerful and useful!

Now, we can start a fire with light.
Focusing most light onto the focal point, immense energy will gather up and ignite!

With focused light, we have our spectacles which help us see distant image clearly.

That's just basic focused light.

Now, what happens if you intensify your focus?

From light rays to light beams.
From light beams to Laser.

Humanity found laser and used it in 1960 and have found its way into optical storages (CDs, DVDs)

Later various application includes bar code readers, laser printers and laser pointers.

By intensifying the focus, laser can cut Diamonds. It can also cut, weild and shape almost all metals.

Military uses it for range-finding, target designation and illumination.

Other uses included surgery, diagnostics and Eyecare.

All these made possible just by focusing light.

Having said so, do not gloat over your high marks (like that 71/80 boy) or get depressed over your record-breaking low marks.

Yes, memorising is good but understanding is better.

Ask yourself why are zinc oxides and aluminum oxides amphoteric?

We must know that amphoteric oxides can be both acidic or basic according to the conditions.

Take zinc oxides for example.

Zinc oxides react with sulphuric acid to form a salt, zinc sulphate, and water.

ZnO + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2O

Zinc oxides also reacts with sodium hydroxide to form sodium zincate and water.

ZnO + 2NaOH → Na2 ZnO2 + H2O

Zinc oxides does react with both acid or alkalis and thus is amphoteric.

So let's recall...

Acidic oxides reacts only with alkalis to form salt and water only. (Oxides of non-metal, Carbon dioxide, CO2. Sulphure dioxide, SO2)

Basix oxides reacts only with acids to form salt and water only. (Oxides of metal or bases, sodium oxides,Na2O. Magnesium oxides, MgO)

Neutral oxides are also oxides of non-metals and they contain less oxygen than the corresponding acidic oxides. ( Carbon monoxide, CO. Nitrogen monoxide, NO)

Amphoteric oxides reacts with both acids or alkalis to form salt and water only.

Remember, understanding is better than memorising.

Why does pythagoras theorem states that ?

The Pythagorean Theorem is a statement about triangles containing a right angle.

The Pythagorean Theorem states that:

Congratulations!

You have lived to see the 5th Unique Highlights! Lucky ones, it is my pleasure to announce that Class 5/2 Blog is officially 1 month old!

With an influx of 200 views, it is really quite an achievement.

Right, the Committee believes each and everyone of you is a leader in your rightful areas. We

Teachers' Day Celebration!

Well, I don't know. I am laughing as I am writing (well, typing) this.

28th August 2008, Chua Chu Kang Secondary School celebrated Teachers' Day.

For Class 5/2, it was a rather exhausting day, considering we've got 2 Lit Paper with an average of 3 essays per paper, a rather draggy (correct me if I am wrong!) performance in the hall and an Video Invitation to all our Teachers in our cosy Classroom.

I am sure each individual Profounders had their share of laughters during the course of the day!

Actual Teachers' Day is 1st September so the Committee is not late in wishing all the Teachers, "Happy Teachers' Day!" Imagine it echo beautifully...

Class 5/2 have gathered people to write their own love message to every teacher.

It was then complied, printed and binded into 16 different booklets to 16 different teachers!

Credits to everyone who have literally scarificed their own time, despite the inconvience for this!

Records even shows that a full 10 hours was spent on this and the Committee Thank You on behalf of all our beloved teachers.

Teachers' Day Video is also commendable, despite having some flaws.

Lots of time and not to mention effort, is being invested into it.

Thank You Jazreel for the Video. It was a really memorable time for the teachers!

X-country @ Japanese Garden

Yes, it is this event which huals tremendous participants into the Japanese Garden on 29th August 2008. A awe-inspiring 1.2k students turned up!

The sporting spirit burns stronger even after the Olympics! With the Girls running 3.6km and the Boys running 4.8km, it is no wonder competition seems impossible to advoid.

Sadly, Class 5/2 have had 14 missing souls...

On a happier side, we have a few Profounders who have earned their rights to a Trophy. It was only through great endurance and strenght and this celebrates Man victory in times of hardship!

Olympics Closure!

Congratulations! 24th August 2008 have wrapped the Olympics to a final conclusion!

Started on 8th August 2008, it was indeed The Event of The Year!
16 days of glory, joy and tremedous excitement just ended with a BIG BANG!

Anyway... here are the top 3 final overall medal standings for 2008 Olympics.

Coming in 1st... (Drum roll...) (Drum roll not effective! All knew China will get it!)

China! coming in with a total of 51 Gold, 21 Silver and 28 Bronze medals!

A stunning total number of 100 Medals!

And... trying to catch up, we have USA coming in 2nd! It was a close competition and it was only so close! With a total of 36 Gold, 38 Silver and 36 Bronze medals, the USA will be held in high esteem!

A marvellous display of 110 Medals!

Last but no least (that was really cliché), we have the Russian Federation with a total of 23 Gold, 21 Silver and 28 Bronze medals! The great empire have shown and proven their power to the world!

A dizzling array of 72 Medals!

The Olympics along with it's flame may be over but the human passion for peace burns on!

Surely, this is where legends are made and records broken.

The Closure of the Olympics is a significant event. Definately it deserve a place in this blog!

The 'O' levels English Oral Examinations are forthcoming! In just 2 days time, some of us will be put to The Test.

Remember what you have been taught in school! Just a quick revision...

3 Components for English Oral. 2 Examiners. 1 Goal.

Manners is important. Greet the examiners.

1. Reading Aloud.

Remember to
1) read clearly with a reasonable and comfortable (comf-terble) speed.
2) appear confident! This will create a positive impression which helps to win the mental war!
3) pasue when appropriate! As in after each paragraphs, full-stops and commas.
4) differciate the 'the' and 'an' before any consenent!

2. Picture Discussion.

Make sure you describe characters outward appearance.

Remember to
1) answer any question that was asked directly!
2) zoom in to at least 2 character in the picture!
Discuss -Actions
-Thoughts
-Feelings
3) Suggest what happened before the picture is taken and what might happen after the picture is taken.
4) portray the significance of the picture!

3. Conversation.

Make frequent eye contact to show that you are connected to the examiner! Do not look so downcast! Share your vision with both of them. Eye contact suggest your confidence level!

1) Answer the question directly!
2) Quote an Ancedote! This meant bringing in your personal story.
3) Suggest the flipside of the question.
4) the significance of the question! What themes are brought out? Environmental Issues, The Arts and Sports.

Welcome to another much anticipated, not to mention long-waited, Unique Highlights!

Firstly, let me announce that this Blog is 26 Days Old! With a stunningly huge number of visitors, no wonder 26 days passed by blissfully!

This time, we will focus on many events. The overview of 4th Unique Highlights Edition:

1st: National Day Parade (8th August, in school)

2nd: Release of the 'O' level results on 12th August 2008 at 11:55am

3rd: Glismpe of the future...

Hysterically, we are 10 days late for all these Delirious Events! The Committee apologizes and promise we will do better!

1.

8th August 2008, Friday

Today, I went to Chua Chu Kang Secondary School for an event. They called it National Day Celebration. I don't feel complete today. Some parts of me are not in school. I'm not sure where they went to...

The school was covered with a sea of 'red'! It was a really 'bloody'? day.

I don't know why I am writing in simple sentences still. I am learning to write better.

The Morning started off with Muster Parade. Yes, it's spelt Muster and not Master for your information. I saw Wei Xian marching in his Uniform! I got so excited by the time he marches pass me!

After which, the Muster Parade ends. Now, the School had invited some students from India to perform!

That was one dizzling performance! I had so much fun and laughter!

Then, CCKSS idol was up! I had no idea what it really was! That was really the only event I enjoyed! hehe.

The young malay boy won the contest! I feel that he is really cute. ^^

After that I went back home. Today was a really good day for me despite having rain during the last part.

Olympics News

American Michael Phelps swims into history with his 8th and final Gold this year.

He won't have to share the "Athlete with most gold medals in a single Olympics" title with compatriot Mark Spitz, who did this 36 years ago in the Munich Games.

United States team in the Men's 4 x 100m Medley Relay clocked 3:29.34, lowering their world record time of 3:30.68 set in Athens 2004. The US team had gone into the race as defending Olympic champions and fastest qualifiers.

Closer to home, Singapore Table Tennis Women's Team...

The *Silver medal* for Singapore which will end their 48-year-long void of Olympic medals!

Olympics Behind the Television

The managing director of Olympic Broadcasting Services, Manolo Romero is currently stationed in Beijing to cover the 2008 Summer Games.

As chief executive officer of BOB (Beijing Olympics Broadcasting), Romero took a few minutes out of his busy day to receive interviewers from the BOCOG official website to talk about his experience, now that the Beijing Olympic Games has reached its midpoint.

Romero's staff works to provide worldwide broadcasting companies with more than 5,000 hours of footage, all in high definition, a first in Olympic coverage history.

When satellites started half a century ago, he remembers, television was black and white.
For Romero, the Beijing Games is a big challenge. With cultural differences and language barriers in the way, communication can be difficult, but he thinks his crew handles every situation the best way it can.

The footage they have provided to broadcasters, including NBC, have been received quite positively.

Also, if you do are still in the dark, next Olympics will be held in London in 2012.

So much to talk about from Day Fourteen of Beijing 2008 – The Unites States "Dream Team" redeeming itself by reaching the Men's Basketball final and China's triumphant trio of Women's Table Tennis medalists, is just one part.

But where else can we start than the National Stadium where the undisputed king and queen of the track have reigned supreme: middle distance runner Tirunesh Dibaba and the sprint-king man of the moment Usain Bolt, whose world record breaking, gold medal grabbing antics just keep on rolling.

Let's start with Bolt. Tonight was Jamaica's chance to seize their first 4 x 100 meters final – a relative breeze with defending champions Great Britain and traditional powerhouse, the United States, both disqualified.

So did Bolt, Asafa Powell, Nesta Carter, and Michael Frater simply stroll around the Birds Nest – not for a moment. Instead they set a new world record of 37.10. Bolt's third this week. Trinidad and Tobago captured silver, while Japan took the bronze.

However it wasn't quite the same Jamaican joy in the Women's 4 x 100m though, who joined in the baton-dropping mayhem that beset the United States Men's and Women's teams.

Guilty parties this time were 100m silver medalist Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart of Jamaica, who fumbled the baton, and knocked Great Britain off track with them.

The Russia quartet Evgeniya Polyakova, Aleksandra Fedoriva, Yulia Gushchina and Yuliya Chermoshanskaya seized their chance to win in a time of 42.31. The silver medal went to Belgium and bronze to Nigeria.

Food and Fun Fair Carnival!

Welcome to another exciting time of our Unique Highlights!

Today, be stun by many new discoveries and reveals some basic tips for a business.

Warning: Post is long. Read at your own risk. (Will help your English though)

SO, what does Food and Fun Fair Carnival means to you?

For Class 5/2, we were Unique. Let me fill you in with some details so bucker up your seatbelts!

Warning: Details may prove too strong for some. Only for the Prounders.

It is my previlage and honour to say that the Carnival was a success! Credits goes to many teachers In-Charge. (Sorry but there are too many teachers to name them)

Now closer to home, 5/2 set up a double duel challenge for the masses consisting a throwing challenge, blowing out the candles (thinking dirty?) and not forgeting the many glittery prizes.

Let's give the In-Charge, not in any particular order, a good pat on the shoulder.

A comment by JieXiang: Firstly, I would like to thank Valarie, Alvin, Yong Kang, Emily and Jershon especially. They were really helpful as they guide me through this event. I dare not say it is a person efforts. I also appreciate the efforts and help given by the class and teachers.:) Really had been a great experience as the organiser of the class stall. Still i would like to thank everyone that has put in effort to help to make our stall sucessful during the family day carnival dated (2/8/08) have a good day guys :).

They really deserved this glorious moment where people are cheering on for them! Working through hours of preparation and planning.

Of course not leaving out anyone who has one way or another helped for the Carnival Stall!
This joyful and delirious event must be remembered by many!

The Big Bang. Where creation starts.

How do you host a food/game stall?

The number one skill needed here is Leadership. We need support from the people. We need commitment and disciple for ourselves. We need to be clear and precise in our instructions.

We need a lot more from ourselves.

Some of you must be feeling discouraged. You say, "I am not a leader le...".

But the Committee assurringly says," You are one already".

I will not go to that. So out of point... Social Studies essay you will get a fail! >.<
I will use Class 5/2 game challenge as an example
Imagine this as a interview.

Committee: What is your budget?

Planner (in a British accent): Oo around $40.

Committee (Laughing): How do you get such an amount?

Planner (Laughing back): From the rubbish dump!

That was just a lame joke... you thought it would be real didn't ya?

Alright jokes aside. (An U.F.O flew past and I waved at them)

Your budget must look sensible so that your authority can sponser it. It will be terrible when you say you need $10000 for the stall. It is just nonsense!

In the case of Alvin and Jiexiang, they asked for contribution from the class.

This is another alternative for you to gather your targeted amount.

Just ask, beg, steal or rob the bank to get your budget. (Arranged from the safest to the most risky) I am not responsible if you get caught alright! We aren't encouraging you either, it is just an "alternative".

Secondly, consider manpower! (All the Machos goes argh!)

You need people to help you with your stall. You can't possibly hold on your stall for long...

Remember to consider your people's welfare! Buy them something to encourage them and to spur them on.

Being caring is a leader's quality.

Break them on in shifts and make sure no one does more than what he/she needs.

Of course check those who does less than he/she indicated the day before.

Lastly, consider advertising.
Have your objective in mind. Earning $$$ is your objective.

Every business owner never opens a stall to lose money.

So you too, must make sure your power of attraction is strong.

One way to increase your attraction and popularity is through discounts.

We see the Supermarkets like FairPrice, Giant and Shop&Save giving discounts every time! Hence, they get popular over time. (Ask anyone in Singapore and they are sure to know these Supermarkets) People just love going to a shop which have countless discount banners.

In the same way, give special promotions or discounts for your stall.

Next, is the decoration.

People judge you from the first 5 seconds from your appearance. This goes to be true for stalls.

Neatly decorated stall attracts people. In turn, people attracts people.

Lastly, Advertisement.

Coca-Cola spent around US$160 Billion on advertisement alone worldwide.
Also, even the poorest, the most isolated country in Africa knows what Coca-Cola is!

MacDonald spent US$120 Billion on advertisement alone worldwide.

Started in 1954 by Ray Kroc, proudly having a joint with Dick's restaurant in California, San Bernardino.

Ronald Macdonald the happy clown first appeared in 1963.

Today, an approximate 30,000 local restaurant are serving 52 million people in more than 100 countries each day.

Now, ask every kid in town what they like most and most of them replied," MacDonalds!"

What does it tells you? Advertisement is expensive but it is the most effective in bringing in revenues. If not why these major leading companies bother to even spend this much?

So we can see some stalls in the carnival giving pamplets and coupons away. Pasting their stall's name on walls along the corridor, on the floor to be trampled upon. Successful? You bet they were.

Teacher's Day Celebration! (Part 2)

Welcome back to the 2nd edition of last week's highlights!

To start off, a terrible news plague the class, threatening to erase the existence of the celebration.

On 28th of July 2008 at 11:03am, Mr Kong shocked some of us. The Teacher's day performance will most likely be cancelled off due to the clashes in venues and availablity of performing space.

Spoilers: Cross country will be held at Japanese Garden in Singapore.

The committee will now crack their heads (imagine that) and will inform the class if we would continue the event. Do your part by Voting on the right!

On a lighter side, the preparation on 26 of July 2008 will be reviewed here.

Week 2 progress rate: 50% for dancers, 70% for actors.

The progress rate has exceeded the expectations of the Committee. As such, there will be NO Reheresal ( Spelt that correctly! yay!) this Saturday, 2nd August 2008.

We have had so much fun and I manage to snap some pictures!
